Denmark issues first batch of online gambling licenses before new regulations are implemented.

Denmark has issued 38 online gambling licenses to operators, just before the opening of the legalized online gambling market in Denmark on January 1, 2012.

Among the operators who successfully applied for and received a license are PokerStars, bwin.party, PKR, 888, Unibet and Betfair.

Companies registered in Malta totaled around 20 of the licenses, followed next by Denmark with a total of nine.

Overall, Denmark has granted 55 licenses, which will result in up to 200 domain names. These domain names will be used by online poker operators.

The issuance of the licenses comes just ahead of the new online gambling regulations, set to come into force on January 1. This legislation, approved by Denmark’s parliament and the European Commission, adds Denmark to the growing list of EU countries to regulate online gambling.
